The Age of The Guptas:
1. The Gupta Dynasty was established by Sri Gupta. But the first important king of this dynasty was Chandragupta I. (320 - 335 A.D.)
2. Samudragupta was the son of Chandragupta I. He was a glorious king. We know a great deal about him because of an inscription engraved on a pillar at Allahabad. Samudragupta was not merely a conqueror, he was also a poet and a musician. In one of his coins he is shown playing a veena. He is considered ‘Indian Napoleon’
3. Chandragupta II (375 - 414 A.D. ):- Chandragupta II was the son of Samudragupta. He is also known as Vikramaditya. He defeated the Shakas. He is best remembered for his patronage of learning and the arts.
4. During the period of Chandragupta II a scholar of China, FaHien (405-411 A.D.) came to India
5. A poet and dramatist and writer, Kalidas lived at the court of Chandragupta II. Kalidas wrote a play, Abhijnanashakuntalam and poems, Meghaduta and Raghuvamsha. Another book Panchatantra written by Vishnu Sharma also belongs to Guptas Period. Kalidas is known as Shakespeare of India.
6. Two of the well-known scientists of this time were Aryabhata and Varahamihira both of whom were astronomers and mathematicians. Aryabhata explained that the earth moves round the Sun.
7. Indian mathematicians used the decimal system and knew about zero.
8. The Indian method of writing numerals was adopted by the Arabs, and from them, it was taken by the Europeans. So what we call Arabic numerals today are originally, Indian.
9. The Iron Pillar at Mehrauli near Delhi is the example of superior type of iron used at this time.
10. First time ever before the temples were constructed of materials like brick and stone. The early temples were in the shape of caves cut into the hills as Ajanta and Ellora.
11. The Ajanta caves were cut into hill-sides, near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. The walls of the caves were covered with paintings known as murals depicting the life of the Buddha.
