Democracy and Political Parties:
Democracy:- The Glorious Revolution which developed the democracy took place in 1688 in England. It is also known as Blood less Revolution. The Modern Democracy began in Europe.
A Government consists of (i) the legislature, (ii) the executive and (iii) the judiciary.
Elections and Political Parties:-
(1) To make sure that elections are free and fair, elections are managed by an independent body called the Election Commission. The Election Commissioners are appointed by the President. The Election Commission manages the election of the President, Vice President, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishads. The head of the Election Commission is the Chief Election Commissioner. It is the Commission’s task to approve election symbols to the political parties, it can cancel the election symbol of any political party and it gives and cancels as well as the recognition of the political parties.
(2) In America there is a Bi-Party System (Two-Parry System) (1) Democratic Party and (2) Republican party
(3) Symbols:- In Britain there are three Parties (1) Conservative (2) Labour (3) Liberal
(4) India have multi-party system.
(5) In India, a party is called a national party, if it is recognised by the Election Commission in four or more states.

Uttar Pradesh - Samaj Vadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party ; Andhra Pradesh— Telgu Desham ;Tamil Nadu - D.M.K., Anna D.M.K. & T.M.C ; Sikkim — Sikkim Sangram Parishad; Maharashtra -Shiv Sena ; J & K -National Conference and People’s Democratic Party; Punjab ~ Akali Dal; Haryana — Haryana Vikas Party and Indian Lok Dal ; Assam - Assam Gana Parishad ; Bihar ~ Rashtriya Janta. Some facts about some important parties:-
(1) Congress:- Founded by a retired ICS. Officer A.O. Hume in 1885.-Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru remained the Prime Minister since 1947 to 1964, Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri from 1964 to 1966, Smt. Indira Gandhi from 1966 to 1977 & again from 1980 to 1984. Rajiv Gandhi from 1984 to 1989. Narshima Rao from 1991 to 1996 remained the Prime Minister Congress (Indira) was founded in 1978.
(2) Janta Party:- Founded in 1977 by Jai Prakash Narayan. (Morarji Desai was the P.M. of India in 1977)
(3) BXP:- First known as Jan Sangh, B.J.P. was founded in 1980. In 1996, 1998 and 1999, Atal Behari Vajpayee became the P.M. of India.
(4) Lok Dal:- Founded by Sh. Charan Singh in 1979.
(5) Janta Dal:- Founded by V.P. Singh in 1989. V.P. Singh was the P.M. in 1989.
(6) Communist Parties:- Formed in 1925. In India there are two Communist Parties, the C.P.I, and C.P.I. (Marxist). These two parties had a common origin but in 1964 those two broke away from the C.P.I, fromed the CPI (M). At present, the CPI (M) has a great deal of support in West Bengal, Tripura and Kerala.
