Audio - visual aids can be classified into three categories-
(1) Audio - teaching aids :-
Audio facilities the hearing sense. It is useful for language teaching. It is used to achieve the cognitive and affective objectives of teaching. Examples of audio - teaching aids are tape - recorder, radio gramophone, telephonic conversation and audio tapes used in tape recorder or language laboratory.
(2) Visual teaching aids :-
Visual aids appeal the visual or seeing function. It helps in achieving the cognitive affective and psychomotor objectives. visual teaching aids can be classified into the following types,
(i) Print, e.g., textbooks, magazines, newspaper, enaydopedia
(ii) Non-projected 2- dimensional, e.g., graphs, charts, pictures, cartoons, comics.
(iii) Non-projected 3- dimensional, e.g., models, diagrams, globes, specimens, puppets.
(iv) Projected-still, e.g., slides, filmstrips, over-head trans piracies microfilms.
(3) Audio - Visual Aids :-
Audio - visual aids facilities the hearing sense as well as appeal the visual or seeing function. Audio - visual aids are any device by means of which the language process may be encouraged or carried on through sense of hearing or sight or both Examples of audio - visual aids are television, movies, video cassettes, close-circuit television etc.
